Why We Love It...
What’s not to love? Pol Couronne is a long-standing Champagne house that goes back to 1887. Over the decades, they’ve maintained holdings from the very best Grand Crus in Champagne – Avize, Ambonnay, Bouzy, and more to create a small production of top-notch cuvees. At 47% off – this is a steal of a deal… and one that will crush most competition in the under $30 dollar range of Champagnes! (p.s. – that range of Under $30 Champagne is shrinking every day… and with warnings from producers and importers over the last several weeks – likely to dry up all together in the coming months)!
Today, the Pol Couronne estate is run by Jean-Baptiste Prévost, one of Paul’s ancestors. Jean-Baptiste grew up with the vineyards of Champagne as his playground, watching his grandfather work the vines tirelessly. The importance of farming was set in his mind early – leading to the sustainable and biodynamic practices utilized in the vineyards to this day.
This Brut Champagne is the torchbearer for the brand – showcasing their house style, with a tip of the cap to all of their varied vineyards and fruit selections. The blend is just about one third each of Champagne’s big three – 34% chardonnay, 35% pinot meunier, and 31% pinot noir. Some 65% of the wine stems from the base wine of the 2017 harvest, with 35% of the wine hailing from prior reserves (2013-2016). An extended time aging on the lees, over 42 months, lends a mature and polished feel to the wine, and while the majority of the wine undergoes a full malolactic conversion – a nice jolt of verve and freshness is well preserved by the 10% of the wine that does not.
The aromas are expressive and forthright, with nutty almond notes, and a sweet tangerine, Meyer lemon medley of citrus, and a fresh-cut grass cleanliness. In the mouth, the wine is crisp and electric – with pink grapefruit, ginger, dried cherries, and a smoky, white sage note. There’s a creamy roundness throughout, but a juicy and bright character to the fruit profile that keeps everything light on its feet… not to mention, in the glass, where it keeps disappearing even as I write this! Good problems, to be certain, and with a sticker falling under $30 – a problem that can easily be remedied with another bottle! Load up on this whilst you can, and you’ll be looking sage all summer long!
