Why We Love It...
Pol Couronne is a long-standing Champagne house that goes back to 1887. Founder Paul Auguste Couronne was born in Hautvillers – the land of Dom Pérignon and birthplace of Champagne. Was it fate? We couldn’t say… but we can say that this is one of the most impressive sparkling rosé bubbles we’ve ever had for under $30!

Today, the Pol Couronne estate is run by Jean-Baptiste Prévost, one of Paul’s ancestors. Jean-Baptiste grew up with the vineyards of Champagne as his playground, watching his grandfather work the vines tirelessly. The importance of farming was set in his mind early – leading to the sustainable and biodynamic practices utilized in the vineyards to this day.
The wine begins with the production of a Coteaux Champenois red based on their best lots of pinot meunier from the Marne Valley. This still wine – added at disgorgement – is what lends the deep, vibrant red to this bottle’s finished color. The base wine for the Champagne is comprised of 27% chardonnay, 26% pinot noir, and 33% pinot meunier – from a series of exceptional sites which includes Grand Crus like Avize, Ambonnay, and Bouzy, among others. 14% of the still red wine completes the blend, after three years aging on the lees. The end result is a modern and seductive Champagne that is an ideal aperitif wine, and also serves perfectly with a charcuterie board of select cured meats and cheeses.
The nose and palate are decidedly fruity, with myriad red fruits of cherries, strawberries, raspberries, and plums, joined by notes of red pepper coulis, dried rose petal, saltwater taffy, and orange peel. The texture is round and creamy, with a voluptuous effervescence that carries everything to a tangy and vibrant finish. This is a simply delicious wine, no two ways about it, and for the price we have today – get more than you think!
