Why We Love It...
Pol Couronne is a long-standing champagne house that goes back to 1887. Founder Paul Auguste Couronne was born in Hautvillers – the land of Dom Pérignon and the birthplace of Champagne. Over the decades, they’ve maintained holdings from the very best Grand Crus in Champagne – Avize, Ambonnay, Bouzy, and more to create a small production of top-notch cuvees. At 46% off – this is a steal of a deal… and one that will crush most competition in the $30 dollar range of Champagnes!

Today, the Pol Couronne estate is run by Jean-Baptiste Prévost, one of Paul’s ancestors. Jean-Baptiste grew up with the vineyards of Champagne as his playground, watching his grandfather work the vines tirelessly. The importance of farming was set in his mind early – leading to the sustainable and biodynamic practices utilized in the vineyards to this day.
This Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs, made from 100% chardonnay Grand Cru, represents the classic proportions of a great Blanc de Blancs – straightforward and penetrating, with richness and tension, lively acidity, and piercing minerality. With a base wine that centers on the 2012 vintage, plus the addition of 30% of reserve wines from the prior three vintages, this cuvee has developed beautifully over time, thanks partly to a prolonged time on the lees of about three and a half years, and a taut, Extra Brut dosage of 5 grams. All of the wine underwent a full malolactic fermentation – adding suppleness to the bright and zippy chardonnay fruit.
Spring wildflowers burst from the glass, followed by mandarin blossoms and star jasmine. A myriad of citrus soon follows, with a focus on tangerine and lemon notes that lead to whispers of toasted almond and ginger. Neither overtly toasty or aggressively sanguine – this cuvee harmoniously balances a touch of buttered toast and a whisper of sea spray… making for a crowd-pleasing and food friendly style of Champagne sure to be a hit at any gathering!
