Sure, this is a special magnum of bubbly…but at the end of the day…why wait? It’s the holiday season, and nothing says I love you quite like a big bottle of Champagne! We might have a few more magnums in stock than the Sous Bois that sold out…but not by much! Exactly 40 bottles ready for the taking!

This is a family-run empire that has survived and thrived for seven generations, over two centuries, in the heart of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. They own 100 hectares of their own grapes, and contract out with some of the greatest growers for another 300 hectares – all spread across 40 Grand Cru and other top sites throughout the Champagne region. Their vintage cuvees get the choice picks of the top lots and this is exactly what this wine is all about!

This vintage 2009 is based on 73% Grand Cru and Premier Cru selections, with a total blend of 40% pinot noir, 33% chardonnay, and 27% pinot meunier from the Montagne de Reims, the Côte des Blancs, and the Vallée de la Marne. A small portion of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels to add weight and depth, but the majority of the wine is blocked, and ferments only in steel – providing the zippy freshness and structural backbone of the final wine. Some 11.5 years aging on the lees provides its own textural richness and depth of flavors, and a judicious 2 grams per liter dosage keeps an electric verve to what was an otherwise warm and plentiful vintage.

The wine showcases toasty and nutty aromatics that pull you into the glass, followed by essence of strawberries, pink grapefruits, golden apples, honeycomb, lime zest, and Korean pear. Mineral accents of chalk and ocean spray carry the wine into a bright and giving finish. Lots of ripe fruits throughout make this approachable and divine for drinking early!

About the Producer

Since 1820, Ameztoi has been the mos respected producer in the region of Getariako Txakolina. They produce both traditional wines in large barrels and they were the inventor of rosé txakolina and one of the first to do méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines in the region. They own 20 hectares of vineyards planted high on the seaside cliffs of the village of Getaria. Ignacio Ameztoi is fifth generation and has played an important role in the developement and innovation in Getariako Txakolina over the last 10 years.
